Today’s appliances are more energy-efficient than those purchased ten or more years ago—especially Energy Star® appliances. An appliance receives the Energy Star® rating if it is significantly more energy-efficient than the minimum government standards, as determined by standard testing procedures. The amount by which an appliance must exceed the minimum standards is different for each product rated, and depends on available technology. Energy Star®-rated products are usually among the most efficient available. Your local electric cooperative may offer a rebate for you to purchase a new Energy Star® appliance to replace an older, less efficient appliance.
Consider replacing your old dishwasher and water heater with a new Energy Star®-rated appliance it will save you water and money!
More information about the Energy Star® program is available at www.energystar.gov.
New Information
On October 3, 2008, President Bush signed into law the "Emergency Economic Stabilization Act of 2008." This bill extended tax credits for energy efficient home improvements. Tax credits for certain residential products will be available beginning January 1, 2009.
On February 17, 2009, President Obama signed a new stimulus bill (The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009) that made some significant changes to the energy efficiency tax credits. The highlights are:
- The tax credits that were previously effective for 2009, have been extended to 2010 as well.
- The tax credit has been raised from 10% to 30%.
- The tax credits that were for a specific dollar amount (ex $300 for a CAC), have been converted to 30% of the cost.
- The maximum credit has been raised from $500 to $1500 for the two years (2009–2010). However, some improvements such as geothermal heat pumps, solar water heaters, and solar panels are not subject to the $1,500 maximum.
For more information and a list of eligible products, go to www.energystar.gov and search for Tax Credits.
